Limited quantities and Brazil’s new state variation BRG-06

Brazil State variation BRG-06 LQ

Dangerous goods packed as limited quantities present a reduced risk during transport compared to the same materials in larger volumes. As a result, they benefit from less stringent packaging standards. However, even under these simplified regulations,  specific requirements must be adhered to. Additionally, Brazil’s introduction of state variation BRG-06 in 2025, brings new considerations to light for consignors and operators.

Packing requirements for limited quantities (LQ)

When transporting goods under LQ provisions, the following key requirements must be met:

  • Combination packages are to be used
  • The maximum net quantity per inner package as indicated in the list of dangerous goods
  •  The total gross mass of the package must not exceed 30 kg
  • The package must meet certain construction requirements, including:
    • withstanding a 1.2-meter drop test
    • withstanding a 3-meter stacking test
  • The outer package must display the limited quantity marking
  • All other applicable transportation regulations remain in effect

Brazil's new state variation: BRG-06

Effective January 1, 2025, Brazil introduces state variation BRG-06, which imposes additional requirements on the transport of dangerous goods in limited quantities for flights involving Brazil as the state of origin or destination.

A key aspect of BRG-06 is the requirement for accompanying documentation. A document (e.g. test report, certificate, or any other valid documentation) proving that the required tests or qualifications for the packaging have been conducted must accompany the consignment.
